Two of our primary concerns at New Talavana are cow protection and sustainable organic agriculture.
The aim of the farm is to move towards self-sufficiency, saving our time for the cultivation of Krishna consciousness.
“Human society needs only sufficient grain and sufficient cows to solve its economic problems. All other things but these two are artificial necessities created by man to kill his valuable life at the human level and waste his time in things which are not needed.” (Srila Prabhupada, Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.2.29, Purport)
The farm consists of 1200 contiguous acres, with about 350 of them being dedicated to pasture for the cows. Around another 400 is wooded, including a small swampy area. The rest of the acreage is used for agriculture, orchards, residential areas and, of course, the temple and public areas.
